Border Triangle Germany

Border Triangle Germany - Czech Republic - Austria

Strictly spoken this is the geographical point, where the three borders of Germany, the Czech Republic and Austria meet. It is located near the Bavarian Ploeckenstein (1,363 m) and the Dreisessel (1,333 m) at the so called Dreiecksmark on a 1,320 m high anticline.

The area around the border triangle covers parts of the Muehlviertel on the Austrian side, parts of the Bohemian Forest on the Czech side and parts of the Bavarian Forest on the German side. This is why in Germany this area is often called the Bavarian Forest border triangle, to which the communities Grainet, Haidmuehle, Hinterschmiding, Jandelsbrunn, Neureichenau and Philippsreut-Mitterfirmiansreut belong.

From 1965 to 1989 the border triangle was a border region separated by barbed wire fences. Unrestricted visiting has been possible not until the opening of the borders to the Eastern European countries. Since then it has turned into a recreation area especially for family vacation with the possibility to discover nature and culture and to enjoy recreational facilities as well as sports throughout the whole year.
